Project 2B - Power Outage
I was affected by the power outage last night, my power was out for almost 20 hours, which cut down my rendering time and post production time a lot and I was unable to access my files on my pc.

Project 2B - Rendering issues - part 2
After emailing my tutor, he gave me some tips on how to lower render time which managed to lower it down to 12 minutes a frame, still too high to complete on time so I went in to chuck it on the x grid but that failed so I will not be able to render all my scenes in time. Another issue I am having is the physical sun and sky doesn't not show up in the background only its light shows up.

Project 2B - Rendering issues
I am currently having rendering issues; so far it is rendering at 30 minutes per frame, after doing the math there is no way I would finish in time. I am going to cut down on rendering but am worried that it will ruin my project. I think it is the amount of trees in my scenes because my first scenes (without trees) rendered fairly quickly. It could also be the physical sun and sky because that is also not in my first scenes.

Project 2B - Environment 2
This is my second environment, I will use this for the majority of my scenes it the forest I will just change the tree formation around a bit. I have decided to not use the leaves as it did slow rendering time down a lot as predicted, but no bother as I will shoot from low angles and not show the top of the trees.

Project 2B - Tree
This is likely the tree I am going to use for my forest; I will duplicate it and change it a bit to differentiate it from the others. I am not positive if I will have the grass bush (leaves) at the top of my tree as it might make my rendering time really long.

Project 2B - Environment 1
My first environment is the cliff face that my rock golem comes alive from after the lightning strike. I made a rock slap and copied it then manipulated it to make the entire cliff side, I will made a forest attached to this for when the golem enters it.

Project 2B - Final Rigging
I have finished rigging my character after changing his geometry a little bit to make him look a little more rocky. I added smaller boulders to his body to make it look like he broke out of the mountain.

Character Origin
My character is a kind of rock baby golem. He is a new born who is very curious but shy. He begins attached to a mountain and then comes alive after a lightning bolt hits the mountain. The rock baby is curious at first, after taking time to realise it is alive he begins to explore his environment which is a forest. During his exploration of the forest the sun comes up scaring him and causing him to run away in terror until he finds a place to hide. After awhile the sun catches up to him and turns him solid again, freezing him with a scared look on his face.
Environnment
Here is an example of my environment. My environment is made up of a forest next to a rock face. My character comes alive out of the rock face and then wanders the forest exploring new it's new environment.

Final Render
This is my final render I decided to use stronger lighting on his side to give the illusion of a light source such as a sun. I specifically chose a texture with cracks in it to enchance the feeling that hes made out of rock. After trying lots of different colours on his eyes I decided on blue as the other colours were either to unnoticeable or made him look evil, whereas I wanted him to look harmless and perhaps scared.
Progress3
This is my first render of the character fully modelled without textures of course. I will probably touch him up a little bit but this is the final basic form. I'm planning to test a lot of different styles of rock textures until I find the one that I feel best suits my character.
Progress2
This is the head of my character I have separately made the eyebrows eyes and tooth then attached them, but the mouth is a slit that I made in the characters head then fill the head with a black sphere to look like it is a open mouth.
Progress1
This is my first skeleton form made up of basic shapes such as spheres and cylinders. Some of the limbs are not attached yet as I find it easier to mould them unattached and then attach them after I am done.

Orthographic Image
This is my orthographic image of my character, he is a kind of baby rock golem that will explore his enviornment and when coming across a scary obstacle, run away with his short legs oscillating very quickly like a wind-up toy.
Project 2A: Pre-Production - Objects
Material
For my material I chose rock as I feel a character made out of rock will look interesting animated especially if i animate its facial movements such as shock or smiling.
Motion
For my motion I decided on using the motion of a wind up toy, specifically its legs. When the toy is fully wound up and released its legs oscillate rapidly, this is the motion i want my character to have when running.
Meaning
For my meaning i chose a telescope to represent the idea of exploration. My character will explore its enviormnent until it comes across an enviormental obstacle that it must overcome, perhaps with a new found object.

Final Version
Here is my hourglass melting but keeping form with final materials on it, this is derived from Salvador Dali's melting clocks, which was my precedent and inspiration for this project. I feel this is a solid expression of time as over the duration of time everything loses it's shape and decays.
Final Material
These are my two final materials i have chosen wood as my rock material because after testing many stone, rock, and dirt materials none of them really looked like rock as much as the wood did. The bottom image is plaster and i used it as my bone material because coming across real bone proved to be fairly difficult.
Exoskeleton Change
I decided to change my exoskeleton from melting to forming an hourglass because an hourglass represents time and salvador dali painted clocks and pocket watches. For my final version i am planning to melt the hourglass but keep its form like i planned to with the original exoskeleton as a reference to salvador's melting clock.

Final Melting + Exoskeleton
This is my final concept as i depicted in my orignal sketches. I'm happy with it as it displays everything i wanted but i feel it's lacking a bit and needs more life. I'm experimenting with different ways of melting the exoskeleton but so far have had no success.

Bone Exoskeleton
Using this bone as a precendent i have designed an exoskeleton for my object. I think i might try refine it a little more and add a material but apart from that i am pretty happy with it.
Melting Second Attempt
This is my second attempt at melting my object. I like this method a lot better as it looks more like melting rather than deflation mainly because of the puddle formed at the base of the object implying it is now a liquid instead of a solid.

Melting First Attempts
This is my first slightly successful attempt at trying to melt my rock object through animation. The effect looks a little more deflating rather than melting but i think if i spend a little more time on each individual frame it will look more like melting. I haven't done my exoskeleton yet so that is why there isn't bone in the middle.

Material Ideas
For my materials I am going to use Rock/Dirt patterns in the form of a kind of skin that will melt off. I think this will be affective because it is very unexpected as rock is an unusual and rarely seen material to melt.
